Converting website names into IP addresses is the main role the DNS servers. It is for our ease and convenience that human readable domain names have been created. Actually these human readable domains that we type are again changed into IP addresses. So in simple words the fundamental job of the DNS is to convert the domain name into its particular IP address and IP address to its corresponding domain name. This could also result in engaging the servers. A non-recursive DNS is one which provides a record of the domain without engaging other servers. Recursive server is mostly used at lower level such as in LAN networking. While the non-recursive servers are probably used for elite levels because of a higher number of requests, so that it provides partial results without engaging other servers.

Safety promotion

Using Chroot network is highly recommended for security reasons. Chroot environment is a process that produces a file that clones the main root system so that if an attacker is cracking the network to reach the root system, he cannot damage the whole system, because he has no access to those files which are not on that network.

There are many issues resulting in the compromising on the DNS Security. Redirection is also a major problem in which an attacker is able to redirect name queries to the DNS servers controlled by him. Flooding one or more DNS servers on a network with recursive queries is a way by which an attacker denies the availability of network services. This is known as Denial of Service Attack. There is a process called foot print in which DNS Zone data could be obtained by the attacker to get information about domain names, computer names and IP addresses.

JavaScript Bug has been fixed by Mozilla 3.5.1

Mozilla Firefox  recently introduce a new feature last week in it 3.5.1 version.the single advisory for the critical JIT vulnerability, it can be update or directly downloaded from the fire fox web site.

Need for this advisory is due to crash bug, that can become an exploitable memory corruption system.the source of browser’s claimed that JavaScript compiler has a flaw that is in Just-in-Time(JIT) which need performance improvement.

Windows XP: Microsoft Releases Critical Patch MS08-067

Today Microsoft surprised everyone with release of its latest security patch for Windows XP customers. MS08-067 is a patch for a vulnerability in RPC Service. RPC is a critical Windows XP service that allows programmers to run code locally or remotely.

Normally Microsoft releases all its security patches on 2nd Tuesday of each month. That is why it is called “Patch Tuesday” by Systems Administrators. This is first emergency patch release by Microsoft since April 2007.

Here is an excerpt from Microsoft Website:

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.

This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Good news is that there have been only very limited and targeted attacks to date. Also another new thing this time is that in combating vulnerability, Microsoft relied only on the feedback from its customers. which is good and new for Microsoft.
