ASUS Eee PC T101MT Review

Posted on 12 May 2011

The touchscreen convertible Asus Eee PC T101MT netbook is now available in the US. Its is an ordinary 10.1-inch netbook, but has a display which can be rotated around and folded down onto the keyboard, to be used as a tablet. Let’s see the system specifications of the new ASUS Eee PC T101 MT, then we’ll get to the first impressions:

  • 1.66 GHz Atom N450 CPU with Hyper Threading Technology
  • 10.1 inch screen, 1024 x 600 (WSVGA), (Touch Screen-Multi Touch) (Multi-Touch only works with Windows 7 Home Premium or higher)
  • WiFi 802.11n
  • 2 GB RAM and 320 GB HDD at 5400 RPM
  • 0.3 megapixel webcam
  • Removable 4 cell 2400 mAh and 35 Watt battery pack
  • Chiclet keyboard
  • Metallic retractable magnetic stylus
  • Windows® 7 Starter (32 bit)
  • 3 USB ports,  VGA output, Ethernet, Kensington Lock, Mic and Headphones jack and Card reader
  • Hi-Definition Audio CODEC, Stereo Speakers, High Quality Mic
  • Weight 1.3 Kg (2.86lbs)

Build wise it is tougher and the screen hinges also seems fine for long term use, but it is reassuring. The Chiclet keyboard isn’t that much flexible either an almost all keys are large enough for touch typing with the exception of the area with directional arrows, CTRL, SHIFT and Fn, which will be annoying.

The first thing which you will immediately realize is that where is the power button? You’ll seek it for a few seconds before finding it.

After the ASUS Eee PC T101MT starts up you will hear some noise coming from the hard drive and even if it ships with 2 GB of RAM the hard drive is almost always making noise, which you will be able to hear in quitter environments.

The Touchscreen Interface:

The touchscreen is pretty disappointing because of the lack of precision near the screen edges. And here is where the ASUS Touch Gate slide-in menu bar is present. This can be seen when we try to double tap a maximized window to restore its size, or try and close it. And even with the stylus the problem still holds.

Slow Performance:

Another problem with this convertible netbook tablet is that it performs slowly. Very simple tasks like, switching to full screen mode, opening a new window in Internet Explorer and to open My Computer and the like will take a few seconds to do rather than instant. Playing videos in 360p and 480p quality results in 100% CPU load. At first it may seem that it is something normal which you encounter after a reboot but after using for some time you will realize that things will remain the same.

Even after adjusting performance settings in the Windows 7 Premium didn’t seem to change things. An example is that even during times you are doing nothing; with only the Task Manager opened the CPU load is about 10-15%. Installing some other OS is recommended, something like a Linux distribution made up only for netbooks. These things are extremely hard to find and to find something compatible with a touch tablet, not even mentioning multi touch is nearly impossible.

While speaking overall, the sale depends on the price as there are many things to do for improving the performance and feel of ASUS Eee PC T101MT.
