How To Optimize Computing Speed for Windows 7 – Part 1

Posted on 09 October 2010

Want your Windows 7 OS to operate at its optimal speed?  Follow the steps given below and note the change of speed in the OS. This is just the first part on optimizing computing speed for Windows 7. We will be presenting 6 more parts in the coming future.

Clean Up System

  • Clean up the system by getting rid of un-necessary files and documents. Also start uninstalling programs from Add/Remove Programs. Secondly by getting rid of system junk files with the help of Windows built-in Disk Cleanup utility.

Unneeded Startup Items

  • There are always some startup, default items that run with the system and slows down the operating process. These un-needed items also causes a storage problem.
Go to the Start menu > Run > Type “msconfig” and press “Enter”. Now goto the “Startup” tab again and uncheck all those unneeded startup items.

De-fragment Hard Drive

  • Defragment your hard drive, as fragmented hard drive will run your computer slowly by increasing the file accessing time. So Hard drive defragmentation once a week is required.

Speed Up Windows 7

  • To increase your Windows 7 boot speed goto the “Start menu” > type “msconfig” in the search box and press “Enter” select “Boot” and then “Timeout” tab. After doing this click on “Advanced Options” to set the “Number of processors” according to your own computer configuration. When you’ll reboot the PC, note that computer will perform faster at startup.

Windows Shutdown Speed

  • In the previous step you learnt about how to optimize startup speed but now you will learn about windows shutdown speed. Click on the Start menu option and type “Regedit” and search to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control, double click on “waittokillservicetimeout” and change it from 12000 to 3000 or less than it. This will minimize the shutdown time.

Visual Affects

  • You might love some visual effects that are within Windows 7 but due to their running your computer will run slow. So to have a faster speed of your Windows 7 you should cancel those visual effects. These whole processes will faster windows conversion speed and then optimize computer speed.

Definitely, this will increase your computer speed. In case if it fails, then it is recommended to run a powerful registry optimizer to free scan and then fix your Windows 7 registry.

Unfortunately the defragger included in Win7 doesnt match up to the expectations. It would have been really neat to have some of the really useful features which other defraggers offer, such as defragging truly automatically, in low free space and doing system files.
