Googling Mobile Phones May Prove To Be Troublesome

Posted on 15 December 2009

Although Google has become extremely successful as a search engine, it should be careful about entering into new ventures, head on with the same confidence, as they might not be as profitable.

According to reports, Google plans to begin selling its own cell phone directly to consumers, which could cause its partners some concern.

This is because if Google enters the market without a wireless carrier as a partner (which can be a possibility), Google would either have to sell the phone at a much higher price than the competition in the market, or subsidize it as other carriers do now.

Even if it offers the subsidies and marketing firepower that is provided by a wireless partner, the new phone would still have to fight against the huge market share of other smartphones.

The profitable mobile market has attracted many companies. Moreover, the increasing number of applications that can be used on the smartphones, and the increasing number of such phones entering the market will definitely transform the use of the Web. Mobile apps are taking the place of Web sites, and although there will still be a need to search for such apps, Web-surfing behavior will change on mobile.

Google, perceiving this, has decided to enter the mobile market, but doing it alone can be risky as it must remember that Google became the leader in web search without designing computers. It is not necessary that it must sell mobile phones to dominate mobile search, as it has already helped in leading the development of the Android operating system.
