Microsoft released Its First Free Anti-virus Software

Posted on 29 September 2009

On Tuesday Microsoft has released its first free anti-virus software that is called Microsoft Security Essentials for computers that are running its Windows operating system.

Available for testing Since June

For testing purposes the software has been available since June, and it has now been available for use about three weeks before the company’s newest version of Windows, Windows 7, goes on sale on Oct. 22.

Software Compatibility

Security Essentials is compatible with Windows XP (Service Packs 2 or 3), Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Malware, or malicious software, can be used for the purpose of stealing passwords or commandeer computers for criminal uses, including as denial-of-service attacks to shut down Web sites.

Security Essentials received positive reviews so far

So far, positive reviews has been received by Security Essentials. AV-Test GmbH, which is an anti-virus testing company has used the beta version of Security Essentials and told Computerworld magazine that the product has detected and treated all viruses. That’s a good thing in this product as there are several other (anti-virus) scanners that are still not able to detect and kill all of these critters yet.

Daily updating of Software

Microsoft has said that Security Essentials will automatically be updated daily as it checks for viruses, spyware and other malicious software, and it is designed such that it runs quietly in the background alerting users only when there is an action for them to take. It is also able to limit CPU and memory usage.
