Sky Map – A Google Map for Astro-Lovers

Posted on 14 August 2009

I received Mars fake email “The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!” you may also heard about it as it is circulating on the web everywhere. I think that it is a good time to explore Google Sky Map – a free application you can use if having Android phone.

T-Mobile is presently selling just two Android phones – G1 & myTouch 3G. However, there are many more you will see coming on T-Mobile, Verizon and other brands in near future.

Sky Map, by merging an Android Phone’s GPS and compass with date and time – will show you a map of the sky right from the place where you will be standing. It makes chart of your selection of stars, star groups, planets and Messier objects (which mean everything else above in our sky) pointed with or without a grid and horizon line.

I checked it myself as I rotated the phone, the celestial bodies were panned by and the screen showed reference about the point in the sky where it was directed. With its manual mode I moved the map on my phone screen without swinging my handset in different directions. User can also see what the sky looks from any location he selects.

And if you want to see any particular astrological body, you just need to type its name in the search bar, and its pointer will guide you towards it. As you go closer to that object pointer’s color changes from blue to orange. For this you should know little more about astronomy. If you type “Dog Star” there in the search bar you will get no results; “Sirius” is the right word to get at it.

It will not push Mount Palomar out of business, but imagine there is a summer night; you are with your family and the glow-flies and also an engaging companion with you – Sky Map.
