10 Best Add-ons – Making Firefox Private and Secure

Everyone seems concerned about his Privacy and Security while browsing web, but not everyone knows how to stay secure and how to make things private. Many of you will already be using some software or different kind of tools to maintain their security, but here is a list of free add-on which are available to be used with Firefox. You may install and download them if they suits your needs. Sorry to users of IE, Safari and other web-browsers and I can not spend my time surfing for add-ons working on those browsers as well.

Stealther

If you want to browse in a private mode, then you should go for Stealther. You will be provided an environment to browse the web which can note be traced. It temporary disables the following:

  • Browsing History (also in Address bar)
  • Cookies
  • Downloaded Files History
  • Disk Cache
  • Saved Form Information
  • Sending of ReferrerHeader
  • Recently Closed Tabs list

There are some other extensions available for Firefox which also let you browse securely but none of them is as good as Stealther. This is what is claimed by Stealther.

The add-on is affective on version 1.0 to 3.o of Firefox.You may download it from here

Close ‘n’ Forget

As the name suggests, just close the current tab and forget what you were browsing. Related cookies will also be closed as well as the full domain is also cleared. To clear the domain, configuration is required.

The add-on is effective for Firefox 2.0 and higher versions. You may download it from here

WOT

If you are looking for a shield which can warn you from risky websites which are scamming their visitors, or spending spam or delivering malware then you must give WOT (Web Of Trust) a try. WOT works as a front-line layer preventing your computer against online threats. WOT has color-coded icons which show you ratings of the websites. Just like a traffic signal, WOT is composed of three colors, each giving you a special meaning for a website. Lets understand what each color means for WOT:

  • Red: to stop
  • Yellow: caution
  • Green: to go; website is safe

WOT also lets you sets a protection level for children by blocking inappropriate content.

NoScript

“Firefox is really safer with NoScript”. This is not what experts are saying about NoScript. This tool provides extra protection to your Firefox by allowing JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run from trusted domains of your choice only. This approach helps preventing the exploitation of security vulnerabilities.

NoScript works with Firefox 1.5 and above versions.You may download NoScript from here.

Panic

If you are in the habbit of browsing websites which you think you shouldn’t visit at workplace or at some place where chances are there to be caught up, then this add-on is for you. That is how it got its name because it can save you from panic. In just a single click, this extension closes all the open tabs and opens a single tab which is showing results from Google against a search “Increasing Workplace Productivity”. That is the default setting, but you can change the default page and can set a page of your choice in the tab.

hideBad

Just like Panic, this also lets you quickly hide all the tabs in the current window by closing them, and opens a new tab with the homepage. But, before hiding, all the tabs are saved which can be recovered later on. hideBad can also clear the following at user’s choice to make sure the privacy:

  • History
  • Recently Closed Tabs list
  • Saved form info
  • Saved passwords
  • Download history
  • Cookies
  • Cache
  • Searchbar

TabRenamizer

TabRenamizer lets you change the titles of tabs to random ones with just a simple click as well as it allows you to choose a custom title for each tab. It has two modes of functionality:

  • Paranoid mode: for random titles with a click
  • Custom mode: for custom titles

Gish It / tEMPORARYiNBOX / spamavert

If you have to register to a website and you are not sure about them, then these add-ons are great for you. These add-ons protect your inboxed from spam by allowing you to get emails-ids for temporary use only. So you may use those email-ids to get registered in websites and dispose them after use.

spamavert works with Firefox 3.0 and above; and may be downloaded from here.

BetterPrivacy

If you are concerend about longterm cookies then this add-on is for you. Longterm cookies are new generation cookies which reside on your system; most of them are generated by a Flash plugin and offer unlimited user tracking. An example site using such cookies is www.orkut.com and www.youtube.com.

BetterPrivacy helps you protect your privacy by removing such cookies on each time you exit browser as well as lets you immediately delete those cookies.

Ghostery

“If you’re worried about your privacy online, this extension is definitely for you.” This is what LifeHacker says about Ghostery.

    More good info. Privacy , I did not know that there was such a thing on the internet with all this beta testing, browsers and such. It is good that a tool like this is out and it is much needed.
