Love Thy Neighbor but hack his Wi-Fi

Posted on 04 February 2009

My neighbor  works for a fortune 500 company. I don’t know what he does exactly but he got a 10mbps internet connection attached to his WiFi router. He is mostly not home till late in the evening. so all this bandwidth sits idle all day. such a waste!

I did try to connect to this router many times but it kept asking for a password. That son of gun must have it encrypted it. So what should I do, It is a sin to have a 10mbps wireless in range and not hack it. Its a sin. Too much for love thy neighbor..Let’s hack his Wi-Fi (For Educational Purpose of course )

wirelesshacking

And, by the way, I am his neighbor too… and he even won’t share his Wi-Fi with me.. what and A*s. He is more than welcome to use my 1Mbps DSL anytime. I have not put a password on it because I believe in sharing.

So, My quest for hacking my neighbor’s Wi-Fi (For Educational Purpose Only) has begun, I have done some initial research and found that I would need following tools

  1. CommView for Wi-Fi

  2. WEP Key Recovery

  3. Aircrack-NG

Let’ me find them on some forums etc…

Step by Step notes of what I am planning to do..

  1. Install Commview, then paste the included “cv.exe” to the directory you installed it to (c:program filescommviewwifi)
  2. Open commview and install the commview drivers to a card. It should prompt you about your card and than automatically install the driver. It is important that you have 1 card that works with commview or else the rest of the tutorial will not work
  3. Go to the “rules” tab and check “enable advanced rules”
  4. Type in the box labled formula “tods=1 and dmac=FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF” then type a name for your formula in the box labled name and than click add/edit.
  5. This should now appear in the upper box. if it is not checked, check it.
  6. Click settings>options>memory usage and turn maximum packets in buffer to 20000 (max). If it prompts you to restart it, do so. There are three funnel looking things on the main menu bar of commview. uncheck all but the first one (one labled “capture data packets”)commview
  7. Click the play button and scan for the network you want to crack.
  8. Once you have found it, drag the channel menu down to the desired channel and click capture.
  9. Now using your other adapter thats not capturing, connect to the password protected network. when it asks you for key, type in something random, i used 1234567890.
  10. It should now say connected with limited connectivity.
  11. Go back to your commview menu and click on the packets tab. you should see a couple of packets.wep-recovery
  12. Looking at the protocol column, you should see a couple labled IP/UDP, ARP REQ, and a couple of others. Right click on any packet labled “ARP REQ” and than click send packet, and selected. A mini menu should now appear.
  13. On the mini menu, change packets per second to 2000, and rather than 1 time(s), click continuously, and Then click send.wep-recovery2
  14. Go back to the main commview window and go to the rules tab, and uncheck the rule you made.
  15. You are now injecting and you should see the number of packets rising really fast.
  16. Save the packets, you have to save every 20000 packets, click file, save and than in the save dialogue, remember where you saved it, and instead of saving it as an ncf file, save it as a “dump” .cap file.
  17. Extract the Aircrack-NG folder.
  18. open aircrack-ng-GUI that can be found in the map “bin” and select the files you saved, and than click launch.
  19. Look at the list of IV’s you have, and select the network you want to crack , there should be a list of a lot of them, chose the one with the most IVs.
  20. You are connected to your neighbor’s Wi-Fi. Buy him some nice gift as he just let you use his 4Mbps connection :p

I would share the results of this experiment soon on this blog so don’t forget to subscribe to our RSS Feed or catch me on twitter

Well I would always ask first, but way to go on cracking the connection. Again as others said not the tools I would use but it was effective.

As well Now that you cracked it I would suggest telling him/her that you have and how to secure it, maybe then they will let you borrow it.

and as to the people that are trashing the hacking community, learn what a hacker is first because you might be doing it and trashing ppl for it at the same time.

I have run an open wireless connection for 15 years. Many have used it. It is fun to share.Hack The Planet.

  3. Jim Kaness says:

So I guess if I pick your lock and use your house and girlfriend while you are not using them- then that’s OK too? And don’t forget to leave me your car and credit cards too! Heck, just give me your whole identity while you are not using it!

It was Karl Marx who said, “From each according to his abilities, and to each according to his need.” We know what that led to!

Could that maybe be the reason why human beings invented locks, and guard dogs and guns,etc- and encryption?

  4. me says:

what people don’t know wont hurt them. i plan to use hacked networks for light web browsing while i’m mobile. thi will use a maximum of 5 Mb per session. that wont make any difference to the network owner, even if they are online at the time.

  5. Erika says:

There are valid reasons for using this:

My aunt’s network is WEP encrypted. Any one of us who come over are more than welcome to bring our laptops and use her network, obviously. However, the WEP was written down somewhere, but has since been lost.

This could be used to regain the WEP key, and Internet access for all!

  6. Dg says:

    Wifi is public domain.

If you walk outside with a sign that has information on it people are allowed to read that information. Even if you write that information in a foreign language to encrypt your message.

Since wifi is a signal people can see, they can read it if they have the right tools.

If you really don’t want people to use your wifi you can choose to not broadcast your ssid or go with a wired network.

Like the posters said above me there are a ton of legit reasons for having this work around.

I love the comment made on May 11th! (scroll up and read it…lol) I am just wondering how many of you actually remember having to deal with dial-up internet access? With a whopping 26kbps speed! I live in the middle of nowhere and high speed access isn’t even available to me yet. I may have no problem paying for my own, if that was even an option for me I would, but alas… This way of life may be difficult for you all to grasp but it’s everyday shit to me! This guy is a GOD for posting that tutorial! Thanks man!

  21. GW says:

I don’t see any problem with using someone else’s wifi. My network’s open. A couple neighbors use it. It’s cool as long as they don’t torrent. As long as my bandwidth isn’t impacted, we’re cool. They know this. Common courtesy.

My other neighbors are a**holes with their security-enabled networks and guess what? – Nobody likes them!

That said, Wifi is as important as any utility, it should be free! There’s already a movement across the country for enabling “hot-spots” throughout the major cities. Hack the planet I say!

  22. deity says:

oooooo!!! me likey! likey! thanks for sharing! ^^ i just hacked the neighbor’s wifi. LMAO. it’s totally fun.oh, it’s unsecured so it was pretty easy.

  26. Breezy says:

You could always err.. knock on their door and ask if you can borrow their wifi at certain times of day…

(and of course while you’re out even offer them to borrow yours too, or if you each have ISP problems when you need to do something really important online – thats what I’ve done, I work from home sometimes and I really need a backup not connected to the same ISP occasionally).

  27. Tim Sokol says:

I wonder how the author will feel when someone uses his open internet connection to hack into a bank or distribute child pornography so they don’t have to worry about the authorities tracking them back to their actual point of origin. Open internet connections are open opportunities for hackers, virus producers, freaks and perverts to do their worst without fear of reprise. I guess the writer forgets that not only is his connection open to his neighbors, but anyone in his wifi range with any portable device. Let me give you all some great free advice, lock up your internet connections and change you access information regularly. As for the writer, I certainly hope you re-evaluate the behavior you are trying to promote.

  42. chris says:

Ha,i suspected someone was using my wifi,my router would go all blinky i knew something was up i guess at the time i deserved it as i had only a wep, while i was smoking i noticed them both at a table on laptops seemingly as close as they could get to my router, and sure enough my router was goin nuts,so i just had fun with it id wait till i saw the router going crazy and turn it off…wait 5 min and turn it back on and so forth, sometimes id hear them yell and cuss, especially when they were using it to stream Pandora or show people stuff at their parties, their squeals of dismay bought joy to my heart and gave me a boner,I guess they got sick of the connection dropping all the time cause he actually knocked at the door and asked me if he could use my connection cause the one he was using sucked. It wasn’t like they were poor he lived rent free in his mommy and daddy rental house and he and his gf made good money,

This is a very good tutorial on how to hack wifi, well done but they really need to make just 1 program that you can just click on the desired connection point and it give you the password

Obviously none of you are over the age of 12 or pay for your own internet. Also in case you didn’t know, hacking Wifi is illegal. If you want it so bad get it your bloody self.
